Order changes

For best results, download the latest version of the Instacart app for iOS or Android.

The Instacart app lets you track your personal Shopper’s progress and view item changes. Turn on notifications to get alerts for all changes, including replacements and refunds.

If your personal Shopper hasn’t begun your order, you can update your order in the Order page.  If your Shopper has already started working on your order, you can Chat with them for assistance. 

Add a new item 

To add an item to your order

  1. Make sure you’re in the correct Store page
  2. Find each item you want to add
  3. Tap the Shopping cart icon
  4. At the bottom of the cart window, tap Add to Order in Progress
  5. Follow prompts for confirmation. 

Change quantity or remove an item

In the app

  1. Tap the Account icon at the top left
  2. Tap Order history
  3. Tap the order you want to update
  4. Tap the item you want to edit
  5. Tap the plus or minus symbol to increase or decrease quantity

On the website

  1. At the top right of any page, click Account
  2. Click Your Orders
  3. Select the order you want to update
  4. In the item list, select the item you want to adjust the quantity on
  5. On this item, click the number and adjust as you like 

Update item replacement choices

Go to the Instacart website (this feature isn’t currently available in the Instacart app)

  1. At the top right of any page, click Account
  2. Click Your Orders
  3. Select the order you want to update
  4. Under the item you’d like to update, click Edit replacement option
  5. Choose your preferred replacement option

Approving order changes 

You can select other options for replacements, or choose a refund for the item instead. 

To see items your Shopper has already located—

  1. Tap the current order card at the bottom of the screen OR
  2. Tap the Account icon
  3. Tap Your orders
  4. Select your current order
  5. Tap See Shopped Items
  6. If you approve the change, tap Approve 
  7. If you prefer another option, tap Other options…
  8. Don’t see the option you prefer?  Just tap Chat at the top of the screen to talk to your Shopper.
  9. When shopping is complete, you can tap See Shopped items again to view all the completed changes and items in your order.

Note: Depending on your selected retailer and delivery time, your order may be stored at the appropriate temperature for each item until delivery. We’ll let you know in your order screen if that happens.

Chat with your shopper

While your personal Shopper is working on your order, you can chat with them about changes to your order, to get more information about a recommended replacement, and anything else you want to communicate.

If a Shopper hasn’t started your order yet, you can make changes to your order such as item selections, notes, and replacement options. Learn more about updating your order.

Chat in the Instacart app

Open the Instacart app while your order is in progress.

  1. Tap the current order card at the bottom of the screen OR
  2. Tap the Account icon
  3. Tap Your orders
  4. Select your current order
  5. When your current order screen appears, tap the chat bubble icon in the upper right corner
  6. Send your message
  7. If you have turned on in-app notifications, you’ll receive an alert when your personal Shopper replies.

Chat on the Instacart website

Log in to instacart.com.

  1. Click View order status near the top of the page OR
  2. Click Account
  3. In the dropdown menu, click Your orders
  4. Select your current order
  5. In the upper right of the page, you’ll see a chat box that says, “Leave a message for your shopper here!
  6. Enter a message to your personal Shopper in the box. You can say something like, “Add a bag of oranges!”
  7. To view replies, keep the page open on your browser.

Tracking your order and delivery

It’s easy to track your order, from the moment your personal Shopper starts finding your items until the moment it arrives at your door.

Order status

You can check your order status with the Instacart app or website. 

In the app—

  1. Tap the Account icon
  2. Tap Your orders
  3. Tap an order to view its status

On the website—

  1. Log in and click Account
  2. In the drop down menu, click Your orders
  3. Click on an order to view its status

Tracking your order in progress

When your personal Shopper begins working on your order, you’ll see a message in the Instacart app. If you have notifications turned on, you’ll also receive a notification.

  1. Tap Account > Your orders.
  2. Tap See Shopped Items to view items already found and changes like replacements and refunds.
  3. You can Approve changes or choose Other options for each item.

Want to chat with your Shopper? Tap the Chat link at the top of the screen to let them know if you want to add items to your order or make other changes. Note certain items, such as alcohol, may not be added after your order is placed.

Tracking your delivery in progress

When it’s time for delivery, you’ll see a message in the Instacart app’s order screen. (If you have notifications turned on, you’ll get an alert as well.)

The delivery screen includes an estimated time of arrival and a map you can tap to follow the driver’s progress.

Need to give your driver last-minute delivery instructions? Scroll to the bottom of the delivery screen and tap Chat with shopper. (For safety reasons, drivers might not reply while they’re en route.)
